Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that occurs in children during the rapid growth of adolescence or after 60 years of age from degeneration and instability. This is a mechanical problem with mechanical features of pain. The main problem is the potential for progression of the curve. Once a curve reaches 20 degrees, the spine has a tendency to change in time and should be followed by a spine specialist with at least yearly x-rays. If the curve is progressive, beyond 30 to 40 degrees, surgery is needed. The indications for surgery include back pain, progression of curve or nerve entrapment. Surgery is a fusion to stabilize the entire curve and is usually extensive.
