Core Stregthening exercise

Core Strength is the concept of using the collection of muscles around the spine to support the spine when it is weak. This is best taught by physical therapists that understand the spine. All muscles that surround the torso need to be conditioned and balanced. Abdominal crunches are good, machines or abdominal exercisers can focus those muscles. But oblique and transverse muscles need to be addressed as well as the back spine muscles. Once the muscles are strong, patients need to be taught how to use these muscles for daily activities. Pilates balls are great tools to train and strengthen the core. Crunches with the knees bent, forward and oblique with the elbow crossing to the opposite knee, right and left will strengthen the anterior muscles. Bridging of the torso in extension done carefully will help the balance the posterior muscles.
