Body Mechanics
Body mechanics is the understanding of how best to use your body to move or lift. Proper form will minimize the physical stress of the spine. Keep everything in front of you and bend with the knees not the back. Avoidance of bending, twisting and lifting will remove the highest of loads to the spine. My rule is if it hurts, don’t do it. More importantly, if it hurts, learn and do it differently. Usually, any awkward positions put the highest strain on the back and should be avoided. Concentrate on protecting the position of the spine with your “core” muscles to avoid an unsupported spine.
