Surgery
What is the duration of surgery? Time of surgery is 1 to 2 hours for a standard laminectomy and 3 to 4 hours for laminectomy and fusions,
the complex cases can take up to 5 or 6 hours.
How long in the hospital? Kyphoplasty or discectomy can go home the same day or next
day. Laminectomies stay one or two days. Fusions need 4 to 5 days stay in the hospital.
Post-operative care
When can I shower? You can shower as soon as you feel comfortable, remove the dressing, it can be cleaned with soap and water, be
quick and dry off, then put on a new dressing.
What help will I need after surgery? Family or friends will make the stress of recovery
less. Try to have someone available during the first month. You can walk, go to the bath and kitchen, but you will not shop, do laundry
